Artist Impact Statement

Conceptualizing the design of “The Lost Souls Mask” in “The Jonah People” has been such a rewarding experience, especially through the collaboration with my brilliant colleagues. My first sketches were to display the interconnected web of voices and perspectives in our nation’s history. Through collaboration, it was agreed that the mask of “The Lost Soul” would capture this complex web, in addition to the hideous and grotesque nature of greed over the sanctity of human life. The cracks showcase both the vulnerability of "The Lost Soul" and their failure of morality. The body between the cracks reveals the chaos inside --an invasion of tumorous cells both grotesque and encompassing in their innate desire for dominion. One of my inspirations as an artist is to physically represent the unseen forces of complex interpersonal relationships and the human subconscious. In collaboration with Christelle Matou and Morgan Maters, I reflected on the question “how do we visualize and interact with the possibility of threat”. I was inspired by the human subconscious’s deep fascination with extraterrestrial abduction — something we revere with both deep terror and awe. This emotional paradox further inspired the details of the mask as both otherworldly and yet painfully familiar. I hope this uncanniness is felt by the audience when looking into the eyes of "The Lost Soul".
